R 2 Cents

Today I introduce a new blog where I offer mine and other convicts' opinions on current events or any other situation we choose to critique.

Now, let me take the time to introduce you to the two main contributors: myself, Tommy Gioeli and Mikey Savant. We will occasionally be joined by the likes of many other nefarious players: The Bulldog, Fluffy, the Immigrant and many others. So join us for The Rec ...you may even learn something.

One other thing that I will take the time to explain is our access to the news. We are in federal prison--an island unto itself, and as such, the newspapers and other periodicals are usually at least 10 days late. So please have patience and I promise you that you will be thoroughly entertained.

My first gripe is with that dribbling doper (Rush Limbaugh). It all started when Rush, in an opium-induced stupor, stole an ethical slur from that has-been Sleazy Curtis Sliwa and used it to attack Sliwa's personal target, CNN's own Chris Cuomo. This unchained mouth (Rush), the world's fattest junkie, has the gall to repeatedly use an ethnic slur against Chris which causes his polyester posse to parrot him and insult Chris Cuomo in the presence of his wife and child. Chris aggressively (and appropriately) reacted and the posse slinked away. When things blew up, Rush then mustered the audacity to deny that it was in fact an ethnic slur. You see for years Sleazy Sliwa has been trying to draw a correlation between the Cuomo family and some type of criminal enterprise. He does this by assigning a name from the fictional movie (The Godfather) to Cuomo family members, employees and friends. Sleazy gets way with these insults because he is confined to a goldfish bowl... a local station, with no listeners. Plus, anyone who does listen knows the stories of him eating lead paint and sniffing airplane glue when he was a kid. So in New York with someone like him, we pay no mind.

Now, the Dribbler... he is another story. He has a national audience and can do great harm when allowed to unjustly link Italian Americans to crime. Even though Rush's brain is all wet from drugs, he is still too smart not to know exactly what he is doing. I'll explain. When the Dribbler calls Chris Cuomo, "Fredo" (the slur I have been mentioning) it is a reference to an unsympathetic character from the stereotypical movie that every Italian American man has worn as a yoke around his neck (The Godfather).

Even the Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, a man above reproach, was labeled a gangster by the North Koreans. Not because he is a tough negotiator, but because of his ancestral bloodline. It is a disgrace. No matter how many geniuses, artists, inventors, or Supreme Court Judges that we are proud to have among our ranks--if we let the government and Hollywood have their way Italian Americans will forever be known as a group of gangsters. Every other race and ethnic group have sons who have gained their wealth and power outside of the law. But even they, if mentioned, are anchored back to Italians (the Jewish Mafia, the Russian Mafia and the Irish Mafia, etc.)
The word Mafia is the glue that sticks any and all crime to Italians. Our government, Hollywood and many talentless authors spread it liberally on to the very fabric of society. They even make children's cartoons where the Italians are crooks. That is so very hateful and harmful.

So although we are not a cry-baby kind of people...we must become vigilant and sensitive and deal with these slurs and stereotypes. If not, we will be doing a grave disservice to our heritage and our children. I salute Chris Cuomo for his defense of his personal dignity and his Italian American honor. We must unite and fight against the slurs slung about by men like the Dribbler and Sleazy (whose pedigrees, bloodlines and sanity are questionable, at best).

Chris Cuomo

Maybe because of his privileged childhood cocoon, Chris Cuomo says that he (and he inferred his family and friends) laugh at all of the anti-Italian slander that all too often affects Italian Americans. These "harmless" (according to Chris) slurs: Mafia, WOP, dago, etc., have had such a chilling effect on our heritage as to replace Leonardo DaVinci with Al Capone, Michaelangelo with Lucky Luciano and Enrico Caruso with Tony Soprano. Harmless and laughable! I ask you Chris--was it harmless when they lynched and beat to death Italian Americans in New Orleans? And the media and the politicians of the day justified it by saying that because the victims were Italian they were the lowest form of people who must have committed many crimes and so deserved to die a violent death. (Read the book WOP for the accurate account of which major newspapers and politicians said what). Harmless!

Was it harmless when our Government was so influenced by Hollywood's stereotypical, negative portrayal of our culture that they named a criminal law (RICO Law) after an imaginary gangster, Rico Bandello? So now every time the law is used it reinforces the perceived criminality of Italian Americans. That's right, even when the defendants happen to be from another ethic group (the Israeli Mafia, the Chinese Mafia, the Cuban Mafia) the Government's law and the media's slurs paint the picture that Italians = Crime. So anytime any ethnic group in the country commits a crime and is charged with the prejudicially named Government RICO law, the case is immediately married to the alleged dark side of Italian American culture. Every time the Government charges a RICO enterprise, it sears into the minds of the defendants, the jurors and our fellow citizens that all organized crime leads back to its "origin:" Italian Americans.

Is it harmless to all of the innocent Italian Americans that have died in, and are going to die in jail for crimes that they did not commit all because of this bias law, the Hollywood hype and the media circus that surrounds "Italian Mob" trials? Anyone that thinks that our Government and Hollywood are not aware of the detrimental effect that this constant bombardment of propaganda has on our ethnic group is truly naive. Again I ask, harmless?

Who but Italian Americans pull serious prison time for gambling, collusion and conspiracy all wrapped inside the bigoted law named RICO? Wasn't it your neighbor Geraldine Ferraro's promising political career that was torpedoed by a few well-placed, timed-chants of Mafia? Didn't your own father's dream of a run at the White House get stymied because of the rumors that your saintly mother had ties to the Mafia? Harmless! I think not. Mario Cuomo would have made an excellent president.

It was just a few months ago that I was repulsed by a picture that maligned Bill DeBlasio and your brother Andrew Cuomo. They were on the cover of the NY Daily News. That rag paper had them dressed as old time Mafia hoods holding tommy guns and scowling with the word "Vendetta" emblazoned across the headline. Now there is no connection between these two great New Yorkers and organized crime except for their Italian heritage and the Government-induced bias of the Daily News and the rest of the not so free press… but there was the link for the whole world to see: Italian roots = Crime. This headline was an act of pure bias and hate; not only aimed at these two powerful Italian politicians but at all Italian Americans. This is a Government orchestrated conspiracy to keep us down and always in a scapegoat position. Well, I have news for them. We are not a nationality of criminals but we are, in one way, a nationality of fools… for in our yearning to belong we allowed this discrimination to taint our leaders, our heritage and the reputation of our whole community. After many decades of unopposed stereotyping by our government, Hollywood and the rest of the media and society, we have come to accept this repulsive face of Italian Americans as fact and therefore are not offended by this blatant bigotry.

I would like to let Chris Cuomo know that I am offended. I am offended for all of the hardworking, honest, legitimate Italian Americans that are the victims of this bias. I am offended for all of the union workers that were expelled from the unions because they were alleged to know, or were related to a Government Mafioso (even when this was proven to be untrue). I am offended for all of the hardworking garbage men who had their companies stolen from them and given to friends and relatives of the Government bearcats who stole them. I am offended for the Italian American criminals who are doing extremely long sentences for the crimes that they committed (had they not been of Italian descent they certainly wouldn't receive such harsh sentences). I am offended for the innocent Italian Americans who are serving prison sentences because of who they are related to, or who they are friendly with, or because they would not tell the Government's lies. In the US only children of Italian Americans are punished for the sins of their fathers (prison, no union jobs, no government contracts, no garbage business, etc.). I am even offended for your father who had one hell of a shot at being president before the admiring cheers of, "Mario, Mario, Mario!" turned into shouts of, "Mafia, Mafia Mafia!" at the Democratic Convention.

So in closing I would like to ask you Chris Cuomo, to not make light of this discrimination that has cost so many so much. Also do not assume that because of your national forum that you may speak for us who are truly offended by this and all forms of government sponsored prejudice. Discrimination needs to be stopped. Individuals as well as all groups of people should be treated consistently by our Government no matter the color, religion, bloodline, or where they fall on the social and economic scale. That is the American way and that is the American dream.

Mafia Week

Today's post is about Mafia Week, and other degradations inflicted on Italian Americans:

In a continued stream of propaganda and poison, the media and the media ghouls found a way to boost their end of summer ratings and sagging political careers with one ready made scapegoat: Italian Americans. The camera loving prostitician Rudy "Skullhead" Giuliani is so desperate to jumpstart his done political career that he will defame Italians, defame his ex-wife and children...hell, he would even put on a woman's dress again if he thought it would get him a headline or two. What I would like to know is why he didn't do one of these other publicity stunts and give the Italian-American shtick a rest.

As a matter of fact, I would like to make couple of suggestions that will get his face and name in the papers. You can do a weeks worth of TV on how to marry your first cousin. You can film from a cave in Appalachia, you know, capture the Southern vote? Maybe you could film your sex romps in the apartment overlooking the hollow ground of the 9/11 site. You can do your show on how not to pick a prison chief, police chief or how not to recommend anyone for the homeland security czar (wink, wink).

The final suggestion is a lot more interesting. A mafia captain Richie "Shellachead" Cantarella stated that you toasted the attack on our twin towers. He quoted you. He said you raised your glass and said, "9/11 was the best fuckin' thing that ever happened to your career." So maybe you should do something for 9/11. Maybe you should read some of the heroes names. Maybe you should help some survivors. Maybe you should volunteer some of your security money to the 9/11 fund. Or better yet, maybe you should volunteer to go fight in Afghanistan. You could do all these things with the TV cameras running, except for the sex tape... seeing you naked would make people nauseas (maybe Pepto-Bismol could sponsor that one). If you need anymore suggestions feel free to ask. Just leave us Italian Americans alone.

Now to Hollywood and Robert DeNiro. I think that we can all agree that there are enough movies, books, and jokes to put Italian Americans in the media's lowest class all by themselves. I understand that the movies that are made will never go away. I also understand that as long as the public is still interested, greed will prompt you into making more Italian gangster movies. What I don't understand is why did you have to make a cartoon depicting Italian Americans as gangsters (A Shark Tale)? Was there a reason to poison a whole new generation of children? Did you, DeNiro, have to lend your name and your voice to this project? Maybe we should start printing "fagetaboutit" on pampers this way we could poison baby's minds at birth. Robert DeNiro, you are in a position to choose your own projects. How about rewriting some of the stereotypes that you helped create? How about a movie on an Italian American war hero, an Italian American doctor or professor? How about an Italian American governor? Not an Italian American president, we don't have one yet. Hmmm, I wonder why?

Stronger Today Than Yesterday,
